IT/Computer Jobs

January 4th, 2010 No Comments

IT jobs should remain steady for the next decade. There will be a lot more automation, especially a big push for self healing systems. Cisco systems came out and talked to us about their plan for the self healing network. This is a long shot but will be very interesting to see. If you are someone who doesn’t like change you could see yourself out of work. IT jobs will most likely shift as we move into a more centralized environment. More and more we are seeing shifts to consolidating servers. Virtualization plays a big part, especially since most servers are underutilized. Let me elaborate, server processers and hard drive space are mainly underutilized but the hard drive speed is not. Moore’s law has given processors huge gains but there are many limitations in traditional hard drives. NOYNIM is always coming up with innovative ways to maximize technology and one breakthrough we are experimenting with is different technologies. For instance, using solid state hard drives to maximize speed and using traditional hard drives as tape drives. When you use traditional hard drive as tape drives you use traditional memory to store all your information. This is possible now that meory sizes are increasing and becoming more affordable. I know this sounds crazy but hard drive write times are starting to cause major delays. NOYNIM, the top Denver computer service provider is noticing this with some clients that have large databases that are utilized numerous times every second. The biggest limitation today is the Cloud computing is starting to create a lot of traction but still has a lot of limitations. In Denver we are seeing only certain niches move into cloud computing; mainly companies that provide a lot of online services. Examples of these companies are: website hosting, online retailers, and dating websites.

If you already have a wsus on server 2003 you will probably have issues after you run a dcpromo on that box.  you will notice that you cant uninstall wsus or windows internal database.  To fix the issue follow the following steps:

To uninstall windows internal database you will need to do the following:

1) HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Microsoft SQL Server
Edit the “InstalledInstances” value and remove “MICROSOFT##SSEE”

2) Remove the “MICROSOFT##SSEE” subkey under
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Microsoft SQL Server

3) Remove the “MSSQL.2005″ subkey under
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Microsoft SQL Server

4) Rename the following folder:
\%Windir%\SYSMSI\SSEE\MSSQL.2005\MSSQL\Data to \%Windir%\SYSMSI\SSEE\MSSQL.2005\MSSQL\Data.old

after you are done with this step try to uninstall windows internal database, it should work

now that you have windows internal database uninstalled we will need to uninstall wsus 3.0

you will need to do the following:

go to:

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Update Services\Server\Setup]

change the value for “wYukonInstalled” from 1 to 0

after you do this you will need to uninstall wsus, this is done by clicking the same file you use to install wsus.

After you do this you should be able to install wsus 3.0

If you need to install something via ActiveX you probably are getting blocked because of security settings if you are using a default configuration.  In order to turn off enhanced security (IE ESC) you will need to open up server manager.  Once you are in server manager look under the security information section.  On the right you will see ”configure IE ESC”   Click this icon and configure your settings accordingly .

if you get errors when installing x64 bit OS’ you will need to enable the virtualization mode inside the bios of the physical box.  This is what Dell calls it, some vendors are different.

 Sometimes you may notice that you cannot login to sql 2005/2008 using SQL Server Authentication and can only login using Windows Authentication. To bypass this simply login with your windows authentication

• right click your instance name,

• go to properties

• click on security

• change server authentication to “SQL Server and Windows Authentication mode”

Also make sure you SA or whatever user has login enabled. Under security — logins

 • right click sa

 • go to status page and make sure login is enabled

if you want to sniff traffic on a juniper netscreen firewall you will need to use the snoop command.

the best thing to do is the following:

Filter out what you want to look for.  If you want to filter out anything coming and going into 192.168.0.1 you will need to do the following:

snoop filter ip 192.168.0.1

once you turn on the filter you will need to enable snoop which is done by just typing in snoop.

After you generate the traffic you will use the get dbuf command to view it.

one dbuf command that i like is ‘get dbuf stream’.  If you want to see other commands just issue a ? after the command.  For example, you
can issue ‘get dbuf ?’ which will show the following:

computer repair Denver-> get dbuf ?
info                 show debug buffer info
mem                  show debug buffer memory content
stream               show debug buffer stream

so to recap you can issue the following commands to sniff and view traffic for 192.168.0.1 (both incoming and outgoing)

snoop filter ip 192.168.0.1
snoop
get dbuf stream

once you are done you can issue ’snoop off’ to turn the sniffing off.

If you want to know what GPO policies are being applied to your box you can run rsop.msc.  Another good tool to run
is gpresult in cmd which will give you other useful information.  gpresult will tell you information as: which security groups the user
is logged into, applied GPOs and user settings.

Disabling directory browsing on apache2

first thing you will need to go is browse into the following directory:

/etc/apache2/sites-available

once you are in there edit the default site (vi default):

under virtualhost you will see a <Directory /> and the next line should be Options followed by +FollowSymLinks

after this add -Indexes so it should look something like this:

<VirtualHost 192.168.0.1:80>
        DocumentRoot /var/www/
        CustomLog /var/log/apache2/access.log common
        ServerName 192.168.0.1
        <Directory />
                Options +FollowSymLinks -Indexes
                AllowOverride none
        </Directory>
</VirtualHost>

after this make sure to restart apache2:

/etc/init.d/apache2 restart
